Giving back to the local community is an important part of the foundation of any Ace Hardware business. For Alex Porter, Owner of Porters Ace Hardware, and his team, looking after cats in need of adoption is an especially fulfilling way to serve the community of Smithville, Missouri.

When Alex asked his General Manager Codie Sherwood for some ideas for charitable events that the store could sponsor, she was quick to suggest a cat adoption event. Codie likes to get involved with cat rescue and adoption, so she got right to work organizing an event at Porters Ace.

"Codie reached out to us after we made a post on social media requesting more locations to host our adoption events," said Teresa Jennings, Founder, Ace’s Sanctuary & Cat Rescue. "People want to come out and meet the cats. Even if they’re not willing to adopt, they’ll make donations to the rescue."

"Codie not only introduced us to Porters Ace, but she also fosters for us," said Nicole Jeffery, Volunteer, Ace’s Sanctuary & Cat Rescue. "She’s always putting in a lot of time and work."

As of 2023, Codie has had 43 cats come through her house and get adopted. It brings Codie great satisfaction to see the cats placed in loving homes.

"To me, saying that we’re the helpful place means that we are compassionate here," said Codie.
