Incandescent light bulbs are commonly used in residential settings and come in a large variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and wattages. Ace Hardware has a wide selection of incandescent bulbs to fit your budget and design preferences.

What are Incandescent Bulbs?

Incandescent bulbs feature a metal filament, usually tungsten, inside a glass-contained vacuum. When heated by electricity flowing through the bulb, the filament glows, producing light. Below are some considerations for choosing the right incandescent bulbs for your home.

Wattage and Lumens

Wattage refers to the amount of power needed to light the bulb filament, while lumens is a measurement of brightness. For the highest possible energy efficiency, look for the lumens you want at the lowest wattages available. This information is usually found on the light bulb packages.

What’s more, light fixtures usually have a sticker or engraving that indicates the maximum recommended bulb wattage. Take care to not exceed the light fixture’s watts, which can reduce the lifespan of your bulbs and fixtures and increase the risk of fires.

Efficiency and Price

Although they produce more heat and are not as efficient as LED bulbs and fluorescent bulbs, incandescent lights are generally less expensive options and an average incandescent bulb lasts around 1,200 hours. They present a good option when looking to buy light bulbs in bulk at relatively low prices.

Dimmer functionality

Installing a dimmer switch helps increase the energy efficiency and lifespan of an incandescent light bulb, extending its operating life significantly. Shop our full selection of dimmer switches, or get expert help choosing the right one at your local Ace Hardware.

Incandescent Light Bulb Types and Sizes

Incandescent bulbs come in numerous sizes, shapes and styles with the bulb packaging usually indicating the type and size. The letter refers to the shape or style, with common incandescent bulb shapes including:

  • Standard household bulbs– A
  • Candle – C
  • Reflector – R
  • Globular – G
  • Tubular – T

This letter is typically followed by a number reflecting the diameter of the bulb. The higher the number, the larger the diameter.

Color Shades and Kelvin Temperature

The color of light emitted from incandescent lights can have an important impact on your spaces, affecting the ambience and suitability for certain tasks. Color temperature is measured in Kelvins (K), with higher Kelvin temperatures appearing whiter and brighter than lower ones.

There are three primary color temperatures for incandescent light bulbs:

  • Soft White/Warm White (2700K – 3000K): Produces a warm, slightly yellowish light to create a cozy and relaxed ambience for bedrooms, dining rooms and living rooms.
  • Bright White/Cool White (3100K – 4500K): Produces a whiter, more energetic light which may have a slightly blue tint. These bulbs are ideal for overhead lighting in kitchens, bathrooms and entryways.
  • Daylight (5000K – 6500K): Produces a bright, crisp light that’s ideal for task lighting in the garage, workshop, office or basement. These bulbs produce light that’s similar to daylight, and are ideal for security lighting.
