Whether you're fixing an electrical problem, installing a new outlet, or repairing electronics, you need the right indoor wire to get the job done. Ace Hardware can help you stock up on everything from speaker wire for your sound system to thermostat wire for your HVAC system. Check out our wide range of metallic and nonmetallic wire products waiting to be discovered online and in stores.
Cable vs Wire: The Difference
Wire and cable tend to be used interchangeably, but the difference between the two is important. Indoor wiring typically uses both wire and cable:
- Wires are single conductors that may be bare or covered by a jacket.
- Cables feature groups of conductors grouped within a jacket covering.
NM Cable vs MC Cable
One of the first things you need to consider when selecting indoor wire is type. There are two main options: NM cable (nonmetallic jacket) and MC cable (metal-clad cable) like aluminum-armored cable. Both types work well as indoor and outdoor wire for residential and commercial projects and offer protection against corrosion, fire and physical damage. However, there are differences between them.
NM Cable
Nonmetallic (NM) cable features an outer sheath or jacket, usually made of PVC. It's generally an economical option for indoor wiring projects, and it’s a lightweight, easy-to-cut material for DIY enthusiasts to use. Because its outer covering won't rust or corrode, nonmetallic wire is a great choice in wet locations. Underground feeder (UF) cable is another type of nonmetallic cable, allowing you to bury it in concrete and use it below ground in basements and crawl spaces. Its outer sheath also makes nonmetallic wire highly flexible for easier routing around corners and in small spaces.
MC Cable
Metallic wire features a protective outer cover made of aluminum, galvanized steel, bronze, brass, stainless steel, or another type of metal. In dry areas, it can last for years due to its durable armor. Metal can hold up to the effects of high temperatures and does not combust, offering added safety. Additionally, MC cable resists damage due to impact, so it is a popular choice in high-traffic areas and in frequently used items where daily wear and tear are likely. Find MC aluminum-armored cable from brands like Southwire at Ace.
Consider Size When Shopping for Indoor Wire
After you have decided whether metal-clad cable or nonmetallic cable is the right choice for your project, you're ready to consider what gauge you need for the job. The gauge of wire refers to its thickness, and the smaller the number, the thicker the wire is.
For repair jobs, using the existing wire as a guide can help. In homes, 12-gauge and 14-gauge wire are the most common sizes, with 12-gauge wire slightly thicker than 14-gauge wire. For building wire, the breaker can also give you clues. Normally, a 20-amp circuit breaker will require 12-gauge or thicker indoor wire.
Color-Coded NM Cables
A simple way to determine the wire gauge for new NM cables is to look at their colors:
- White: 14 gauge
- Yellow: 12 gauge
- Orange: 10 gauge
- Black: 8 or 6 gauge
It is important to note that not all cables produced today are color-coded, and especially old cables do not follow consistent color coding.
Number of Conductors in Building Wire
You’ll notice our selection typically has two numbers associated with each product. For example, a yellow cable may have “12/2” used to describe it. While the first number refers to the wire gauge, the second number refers to the number of conductors inside the cable.
Different Uses for Indoor Wire
Indoor wires have a variety of uses for home improvement projects. Depending on the gauge and wire type, you can find:
- Bare or tinned copper speaker wire for connecting amps and speakers in an audio system. Ace also offers additional AV cables.
- Thermostat wire with moisture-resistant insulation for thermostats and other HVAC units.
- Bell wire for doorbells, intercoms, and security systems.
