While all air hoses are designed to transport air from compressors to pneumatic tools, not all air compressor hoses are created equally. Learn how to find the right compressor hose for your projects from your friends at Ace Hardware.
Choosing the Best Compressor Hose for You
A quality-made air hose is essential to ensuring a tight connection to your power tool, stable air pressure and consistent power output. The main factors to consider when purchasing a new air hose are the hose length you require to tackle a variety of tasks, the material the air hose is constructed with and the internal diameter of the air hose.
Compressor Hose Lengths
Typically, air compressor hose lengths range from 25 to 250 feet. If you frequently work on projects requiring greater distances from your air compressor, a longer compressor hose is convenient and allows maximum movability. On the other hand, if you regularly work in tighter quarters, a shorter air compressor hose might be a better option and avoid tangling.
Air Compressor Hose Materials
The material your air hose is made from will significantly affect the weight of the hose, how well it performs and the flexibility of the line. Here's an overview of the most common types of compressor hose materials to help you make your decision:
Rubber Air Hoses
Usually constructed with a blend of PVC, polyurethane and rubber, these air hoses are incredibly durable and flexible so you can easily work on an array of projects. The heaviest types of compressor hoses on the market, rubber air hoses are naturally abrasion-resistant. Rubber air hoses are also not prone to kinking and rarely need replacing, so they’re suitable for regular to heavy use.
Poly Air Hoses
Incredibly lightweight and easy to transport, poly air hoses provide exceptional performance even in extremely cold temperatures. Polyurethane compressor hoses are known for their durability and hard-wearing properties, which makes them useful for high-pressure applications. However, poly air hoses are less flexible than rubber air hoses and may be vulnerable to certain solvents.
PVC Air Hoses
Durable and abrasion-resistant, PVC air hoses are an economical option. Although not as flexible as poly and rubber air hoses, they're generally easy to maneuver around obstacles and corners without kinking.
Air Hose Internal Diameters
The larger the internal diameter of the air hose, the more air it will be able to transport. Common internal diameter sizes include 6mm, 8mm and 10mm.
When picking the appropriate compressor hose internal diameter, consider the CFM (cubic feet per minute) requirement of your air tool. The higher the CFM requirement, the larger internal diameter you'll need to ensure your tool has enough torque to operate. Hand-held air tools like nailers often require 1 to 3 CFM, which should work well with a 6mm air hose internal diameter. Heavy-duty tools like impact wrenches are more likely to require 6-plus CFM, which will probably require an air hose with an 8mm to 10mm internal diameter to function at full capacity.
Whether you're looking to use a wider array of pneumatic tools with your air compressor or you just need to replace your existing hose, Ace Hardware carries a large variety of air hoses to keep your most-used tools ready to operate.
