At a time when many power tools are king, hand tools still remain the top choice for several indoor and outdoor tasks. Whether you’re using a chopping axe or a splitting axe, or simply want to know the difference, let Ace help you find the right axe you need for the job. Shop different axes, hand axes and other striking tools, then find other essential home improvement tools.
Is There a Difference Between a Splitting Axe and a Hatchet?
Although the two appear awfully similar, they have distinct differences that set them apart. While both can be used to tools that typically have a steel head attached to a wood handle, the main difference comes down to size.
- Axes are much bigger, heavier and tend to be used with two hands. They allow you to complete heavy-duty tasks like felling trees, and axes can do what hatchets can do in a fraction of the time and without wearing out as quickly.
- Hatchets tend to be smaller than axes, meaning that they also weigh less and can be handled with one hand. A hatchet tool is good for simpler tasks like preparing firewood.
Different Types of Splitting Tools
Although there is a clear difference between axes and hatchets, there are multiple varieties of both tools that are worth knowing about. From large splitting and chopping axes to small bushcraft axes, picks and machetes, consider these splitting tools:
- Felling Axe: Perfect of felling trees, these axes have long handles and narrow, sharper blades than splitting mauls or axes. They are designed to cut across wood grain to fell large trees. Often used in logging and forestry.
- Splitting Maul: A wood splitting axe is often a go-to tool for wood stove owners needing to build up their fuel supply. They have large, heavy heads which are far broader than the blade on a felling axe. Mauls can also have blunt sides opposite their blades to hammer wedges.
- Camping Axe: Hand axes or hatchets can be easily packed and carried on camping trips. It’s helpful to have a camping hatchet on hand if you need a wood chopping axe in the back country to prepare and gather your firewood.
- Pick Axe: Also known as a miner’s axe, the pick axe is easily identified thanks to its distinctive t-shaped design. It is useful for breakup rocks or especially hard ground.
- Machete Knife: A long blade with a small handle, machetes can have a ribbed saw-like edge on the opposite side of their blade. They are very effective for clearing through brush and can also split small trees for firewood.
Quality Materials for Striking Tool Handles
The comfort you experience when gripping your axe, hatchet or machete is important to how you use your tool. With so many handles available to choose from, knowing what each has to offer can help you make a decision based on your needs.
- Wood Handle: Lightweight and easily replaceable, wood handles are classic axe features. They tend to be slightly more affordable, but are prone to wear in the elements.
- Fiberglass Handle: Lightweight for comfortable carrying with shock absorbing properties, fiberglass axes are slightly more expensive than wood handles but are just as effective and highly durable.
- Steel Handle: Highly resilient, steel handle axes happen to be costlier and heavier than wood and steel axes. However, hallow steel handles for smaller axes or hatchets provide solid long lasting solutions without the added weight.
Tools, Accessories and Replacement Axe Parts
Regardless of the quality of your tools, time eventually takes its toll. Find handles of varying lengths to replace worn out or damaged handles, as well as replacement and backup pick heads to keep your jobsite prepared. Split wedges are effective tools used for felling trees, while wedge pouches and machete knife sheaths provide convenient storage and safety options for your tools.
