No matter what you're building, there's a type of nail out there for everything. Nails come in all sorts of sizes, materials, shanks and more. Ace offers a wide variety of fastener nails for many purposes.

Types of Fastener Nails

Here are some common types of fastener nails and what they're used for.

  • Common Nails: These most basic yet strong nails are most often used in building and construction work.
  • Box Nails: These nails have thinner shanks than common nails and are used in thin pieces of lumber for light structures like trimming.
  • Finishing Nails: These nails are able to be concealed inside the structure, due to their small heads. They're used to provide a smooth and polished look to finished structures.
  • Drywall Nails: These are used to hang drywall during the construction process.
  • Casing Nails: These nails are especially strong and typically used for attaching molding to doors and windows.

There are many more types of hardware nails than just these that you can explore at Ace. Shop our extensive collection of nails for all projects.

Types of Nail Materials

Nails are made of different materials that each have their own uses and benefits. Here are some materials nails are made of and what construction projects they are frequently used for:

  • Copper: Copper nails are used in copper fabrication, clay and cement roofing, saddlery for horses and the construction of boats. They are incredibly corrosion resistant.
  • Stainless Steel: Stainless steel nails are used in outdoor construction work, due to their resistance to rust.
  • Plastic: Plastic collated nails are used as framing nails. The plastic makes them durable and allows them to survive harsh weather conditions.
  • Brass: Brass nails are extremely durable and strong. They have long been used in the construction of boats and houses.
  • Aluminum: Another strong material for outdoor use, aluminum nails are used to install aluminum siding and metal roofing.

With this wide selection of materials, you'll find the compatible nails you need at Ace.

Types of Nail Shanks

A nail shank is the long part of the nail below the head and above the tip. The type of shank affects how the nail is driven into the material, as well as its structural strength. There are three types of nail shanks.

  • Ring: A ring shank nail has continuous threading, or rings, around the shank to keep it firmly locked into the wood. They are ideal for outdoor construction.
  • Smooth: A smooth shank nail has no threading and can be used in nearly any application. However, they are not as suitable for building structures that require a lot of support.
  • Screw: A screw shank nail has the rotation of ridges on its shank like that of a normal screw. They are easier to install than screws but have the same amount of strength. They are often used for installing decking and flooring.

Ace carries each type of nail shank, so you can have the guaranteed construction strength you need when building.

Of course, you can't use a nail without a trusty hammer! After you pick out the nails you need, check out our hammer selection to help you finish the job.
