At Ace Hardware, we aim to help you secure your property without breaking the bank. Keep unwanted critters out, cattle and other livestock in, and your farm or garden safe with our large variety of garden and agricultural field fences to suit your needs.

Whether you're building a fence around plants in your garden, crops in your fields or livestock on your farm, we've got agriculture and garden fences to get the job done right.

What is a Field Fence Used For?

A field fence is used primarily to establish a large perimeter for your livestock to roam within bounds. Field fences should be highly durable, sturdy, and strong enough to withstand the weight of large animals like cattle or hogs if they brush up against them. Usually, galvanized steel fences have the strength needed to accomplish these tasks.

Field Fences vs Garden Fences

While field fences are used primarily to keep larger animals in (or out of) a designated area, garden fences are put up for a few reasons, including defining a garden boundary, protecting vegetation and plants, or ensuring the safety of smaller animals.

For the most part a plastic garden fence should be able to meet your needs against smaller critters or establish a clearly defined border. But when you have larger animals like elk or deer to contend with, a steel garden fence may be just the ticket!  Sturdier and more durable, a steel garden fence should be able to deter larger animals from reaching your fruit trees and other vegetation.

What to Look for in a Garden Fence

While the best fence for you will largely depend on your purpose for securing your outdoor space, consider the following factors before making your final decision:

  • Sturdiness: A steel garden fence is strong and sturdy, which is why it makes an excellent choice for corralling cattle, hogs and other animals.
  • Material: The type of material you choose should depend on the purpose or function of your fence as well as the outdoor conditions.  Look for a galvanized steel, polyethylene, or polypropylene fence for most agricultural and garden fences.
  • Wind and UV resistance: Consider the location of your fence and the weather it needs to withstand. Ace stocks fences that are designed to slow wind, create drifts for snow storage and stand up to long hours exposed to the sun. A vinyl garden fence may be a great option in high-sun areas.
  • Weight: Lightweight fence material comes in rolls to make it easy to install, move and restore as needed.
  • Color: Find garden and field fence options in a range of colors such as black, green, silver and even red and orange for warning barriers.

What Wire Gauge Do I Need?

Understanding wire gauge can help you better accomplish your DIY projects. Put simply, the higher the number, the smaller the wire. If you’re trying to keep small animals out of your garden or dogs or chickens within their enclosures, higher number wire gauges may prove suitable for the task. However, if you’re building a field fence to keep larger livestock within their enclosed areas, smaller wire gauges are sturdier and more equipped to handle the task.
